Why did it do bad at the Boxoffice?
Bad timing (with all the big movies out)?
Do what you want with a man but do not *beep* with his Cadillac

Because Michael Cera is a crappy actor and nobody wants to see him in a film.
"You know someone lacks intelligence when their only argument is Dont See It."
While I'm a Cera fan (I do everything to stay dedicated to George Michael Bluth) and don't see that much of a problem, I think the population is getting tired of him. He shows extra talent here, but the audience doesn't know that, which leads us to the next problem marketing: Cera was marketed like he usually is, and the film was advertised as a Superbad style raunchfest, when this film is far more lowkey and sweeter in nature.

Ahem...no life...Ahem
I watched the movie and I personally thought it was one of his best.
shareThe movie is very good. It reminded me of some of the 80's teen comedies. Not recommended for "The Hangover" crowd. This movie is for more introspective teens and adults will enjoy it too.
shareAlot of people don't realize Will Ferrel and Adam Sandler both had the same kind of criticism as Mr Cera. In their early films, everyone said they're just playing the same actor. After a couple low key movies, both those actors have come out with some of the biggest movies ever. Cera already has a couple big movies under his belt, superbad and juno for examples. His still young and his career has time to blossom.
Watch every Adam Sandler movie. He's the same awkward "inspirational" underdog in every movie. Will Ferrel is the same random funny guy. Yet both of them have great movies.
No comparison whatsoever. Farrell and Sandler come from an improv/skit comedy background where they had to write, produce and direct their own material.
Cera is simply and actor, and easily replaced by other generic "teen-like" waifs as they come along.
I have a life, dude. It's just that Arrested Development is amazing, with him being the primary reason, and I hate to see him getting bashed like this, when those same criticisms are valid for actors like Robert Downey Jr or Woody Allen without guys complaining of being tired of them. It's just that he's early in his career, and if he takes an extreme risk, it could either turn him into a boxoffice champ or boxoffice poison.
Look closely at RDJ's last few movies:
Sherlock Holmes (wisecracker with a smug sense of humor)
Iron Man (wisecracking superhero with a smug sense of humor and alcohol addiction)
The Soloist (a reporter who likes to make wisecracks)
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (a wisecracking thief with a smug sense of humor)
If you're gonna criticize Cera for the same traits, you need to criticize about 50 other actors in order to make your point remotely valid.
Perfectly said.
shareI think it was for a number of reasons:
1) The R rating restricted the number of people who could see it. I'm sure
younger teens would have wanted to see it but the rating would have
prevented them from doing so.
2) As one of the other posters has pointed out this is not really a mainstream
film - it's appeal is likely limited, more akin to a cult hit than a box
office success. It may well find a bigger audience on DVD.
3) The distributor messed the film about, delaying its release and not doing
that great a job marketing it. Also, the distributor has been struggling for
some time anyway, having had a number of box office flops in quite a short
period.
4) There has been some backlash towards Michael Cera lately. Initially, he was
applauded for his performances but over time it has become clear that much of
his stuff is pretty much the same, and he isn't really that much of a draw
anymore. He may show off a different side in this film but it might be too
late to make people interested in him again.
5) The film may have simply been overlooked because of bigger films currently in
release. 'Avatar' in particularly is continuing to do so well that it isn't
leaving a lot of room in the marketplace for other films.
its an unconventional movie...not mainstream, straight at you humor or subject matter...therefore it go alot of bad word of mouth from the twitter crowd, who generally like more passive entertainment....that and imsure some of the other above reasons...but francios definitely shows that cera has acting range and ability...he played a completely different character who was engaging and memorable...so that knock on him isnt valid anymore...but that said, you gotta play to your strengths.
the guy has talent
Too bad YOUTH IN REVOLT is already in Dollar Theatres, or soon will be. At least if there were to be a sequel (HIGHLY DOUBTFUL after its terrible showing at theatres) They could include the plastic surgery direction from BOOK 4 and use Jesse Eisenburg as NICK to see how he does at the box office. BTW, I read in different places Jesse and Michael Cera can swap roles and no one would honestly notice (or care for that matter)
