I just watched this last night, and hadn't really heard anything about it one way or the other. I just knew the director was also responsible for "The Good Girl," which I liked a lot.
So a lot of people really seem to dislike this film. Not sure why.
Personally, I thought it was absolutely hilarious. I'm going to watch it again, in fact. Some of the one-liners in it really cracked me up. And the Francois scenes were so over-the-top hilarious. The part where he is just stuffing his face with mushrooms had me rolling.
And Justin Long, after being told that "life is really funny." "Only slightly."
Am I alone on this? This movie was hilarious.

1. While it put little bonuses in there for fans of the book (I'm one of them) they really took away from a lot of the book as well. So it was kind of crappy on that part. I also disliked how the movie almost suggested dissociative identity disorder with Francois when it wasn't like that at all in the book.
2. For those who have never read the book, the film was boring and misunderstood. To me, it seems like it would have been more enjoyable if you had read the book; however it goes with the previous point that it still wasn't fulfilling.
3. People seem to have this predisposed need to completely bash everything Michael Cera is in just because he's in it. I personally thought he did a decent job as Nick Twisp (though in the book Nick wasn't quite as nerdy or unconfident) and then as Francois.
4. A big problem people point out apparently is their issue with the vocabulary used by the teenagers. This was a major theme in the book, so it only makes sense that it was adapted to the script. The main argument is that "teenagers don't talk like this" which, to be honest, is mostly true. However, it's not always true, so it's a pretty poor argument. Apparently personality differing from the social norm is a bad thing. Then there's the name dropping argument where Nick points out he likes Sinatra and Sheeni her interest in French writers. It's what they enjoy, it's honestly not a big deal or the end of the world. I thought it made them appear more sophisticated than the average teenager and therefore more interesting. There's nothing wrong with liking little-known writers or older musicians, it's just their taste. Maybe they don't like the stuff that's out today, and that's understandable. What I liked about it is that these kids talk and act more like adults might yet they're restricted to the rules and mores of their parents, their school, society, and most importantly, their age.
With that said, I mostly enjoyed the movie. I'm hoping if there's a sequel it's a little more true to the book, but I will probably still be satisfied. I also wouldn't mind if Cera was re-cast. With having to act two different people in this movie, we might actually get to see him outside his usual role, and I thought we got a good taste of that in this movie. Oh, and I also found it giggle worthy, there were a few one liners that were really great.

Ailinea, thank you for that reply. I was expecting some rude, brash answer like "Because Michael Cera is a fag and you're an idiot" or something.
I haven't had the chance to read the book, but I would really like to. You see, I live in Beijing and it's hard for expats to access any old book they want here. When I get the opportunity though, I'll read it. Good reviews over on goodreads.com.
As for teens talking like they do in this movie...I say thank God. If teens talked the way they do in real life (I used to teach high school in the States), then what a stupid and/or pointless movie that would be.

I didn't hate the movie... I just didn't think it was that funny. Don't get me wrong, it had it's moments... and I got some laughs and chuckles out of it. But for the most part I just thought it was unfocused. While the faux-hipster crap from the two main characters was annoying... the problem isn't necessarily with the faux-hipster crap itself.. it's that they didn't do anything interesting with it... it was just window dressing to score cool points with the intended demographic. I'll admit to being well older than the intended demographic, so I guess that explains why I probably found it more annoying than endearing. I gave the movie a 5/10 rating... not particularly awful, but not nearly as good as I was hoping.
I watched it last night, and I really enjoyed it. I think maybe some people were expecting a routine teen comedy, like American Pie or Cant Hardly Wait, something along those lines, maybe that's why people were dissapointed. But I really thought it was a cute little movie, and I love Michael Cera, I just love the way he delivers his lines. And the part with the car and the lake, I laughed out loud at that one
I liked this movie, but I can kinda understand the hate. The feel of the movie was very hipster-ish and quirky, which not everyone enjoys. There were some AMAZING laugh-out-loud moments for me (eg the car being pushed off the cliff, the mushroom scene, his letter to Bernice) but there weren't MANY of them, which made the movie feel kinda slow and meh at times.
