Pointing out a cliché and then adhering to it (spoilers)

I was quite enjoying this film at the beginning as it made rye observations like, “In films the good guy always gets the girl. In real life they normally end up with pr*cks.”

I thought that was setting the scene to show how he was going to fall hopelessly in love with a girl, only for her to (realistically in my opinion) end up with someone else.

Then at the end it just became another ‘nerdy guy gets the hot girl’ film. I didn’t hate the film, I just thought it didn’t offer anything new after acting like it was going to.

That indeed is ironic. The movie fails in a few things, like character development and bringing a coherent script with adequate content. Some character's stories were never brought to an end, like Vijay's or Lefty's. Then there's that ironic comment. But perhaps he just said that in real life it doesn't happen and didn't mean that the film was real life. A little too far-fetched but..

That's a good point. We're supposed to believe he's a virgin with no luck with the ladies, but he's portrayed by Michael Cera who we can assume gets as much sex as he could want. And then he bumps into a girl by pure chance and everything just works out for him (kind of).

Didn't he end up turning into a prick by the end of the movie? I mean he lied to her and her friends and had someone drug her so she would drop out of school, something she really wanted to do. If that's not acting like a prick then I don't know what is.

I mean those actions alone are far from forgivable and she still ends up going with him.

Yeah, that's where I thought the movie was leading...showing him acting like a jerk, therefore she doesn't go for him and ends up with that other guy (who I've forgotten his name) - hence cliche averted.

But, ohhhh no...

Right, that was what I liked about this movie. I disagree with the OP, as I actually thought the film avoided the cliche. Trent was originally portrayed as the bad guy, but he ended up being the straight laced "good guy". In turn, Nick starts as the good guy and turns out to be the prick who gets the girl.

I think you're missing what Nick said near the end of the movie. Something alone the lines of, "It wasn't Francoise that got the girl in the end, it was really Nick." So really, they did make it so that the good guy wins in the end (to an extent).

If virgin teenage boys take this movie to heart, they're gonna stay virgins for a long time more.
