What were the initials on the creatures skin?

It's a tattoo of the acronym for whatever organization the men at the beginning of the film belonged to, according to the trivia section. It's a neat little detail that is never explained in the movie.

After seeing the initials I went back to the beginning. The guy who planted the explosives at the church had V.S.S.F tattooed onto his hand or arm, I think hand. So basically they were showing you that he had mutated.
