Season 2 E 23 (Race Ipsa): HORRIBLE Error in the Law
Been binging this show, which somehow I missed. . .and got to this episode, and wanted to throw a brick though the TV screen. I can forgive the creative liberties that compress timelines, and even skew some of the probable outcomes for dramatic effect. But THIS episode was so egregiously wrong, it's not forgivable:
Essentially, the case involves police demanding ID from a black man admiring architecture in a white neighborhood. He refuses, they arrest him, he resists. During the trial, the ADA on direct tells the guy the cops had every right to demand ID, and he should've just given it up. I was willing to let that skate; maybe he was simply shading the truth. BUT THEN Alan takes his turn, and says "You know the police have a Constitutional right to your ID, right?" This is not only Exactly Wrong, it's EXACTLY the type of horrific attitude that causes so much trouble for so many.
Bottom line: Absent a crime, THE POLICE HAVE NO RIGHT TO YOUR ID. Learn your rights people; this is Fundamental.
ARRRRRRGH. Okay. Rant over. One SEVERELY FLAWED episode in a series; I suppose their batting average is still pretty good. Sigh.
