I think this film is very underrated. I have a lot of respect for the fact it went for the controversial approach of post-9/11 New York. I also thought the film captured the essence of New York in a post-9/11 world while still being able to mix in some comedy to keep me interested. Overall, I really enjoyed it and I wish other directors would have the courage to produce more films like this one.

There are many independent films where well-known starts like Maggie Gyllenhaal sing up to play for, I presume, less than their usual multi-million dollar fees - it is some kind of atonement, like playing on Broadway. Can someone recommend another film like this?
Amazingly, Danny Leiner, director of "TGNW" is also responsible for "Harold & Kumar doing White Castle" (but, wisely, not for the second one) - an outrageously funny stoner movie, which is completely different, but yet similarly clever and in some sense also underrated.
