Body armor at a gun range?

I noticed Hanssen and Garces wearing body armor at the shooting range. This doesn't seem logical. I can understand the hearing protection and the goggles, but armor?

Is this for real or a goof?

reply

Actually it makes perfect sense, since you'd wear kevlar out in the field.

When I was in the army we even trained shooting with gas masks on.

What you don't see is people running around with hearing /eye protection, when it's for real.

I see it is possible. They are firing in an indoor range and the concern that a bullet can ricochete back to hit the shooter is real (ever see the Youtube video where the guy is firing a rifle outside and the bullet ricochetes off the target and comes ack to graze him on the head?.. and that was outdoors without a backstop or walls). Granted a lot of people shoot at indoor ranges without a mishap but the possibility is still there. The possibility might not be very high but most Government agencies have to follow pretty stringent safety regulations concerning firearms and this may be a safety concern for them.

reply

I think it was part of the movie. AnchoB raises a good point though.

reply

Not really. A properly designed range will not deflect any bullets back towards the firing line. They guy in the youtube video was outside where a rock could easily cause a ricochet, and who knows what he was shooting at. The backstops at indoor ranges are sloped to deflect bullets into the traps or into the ceiling, and there is nothing in the target area that will allow a ricochet to come back toward the firing line. The "train like you fight" explaination is much more likely.

I don't have an opinion. The word "opinion" implies the possibility I'm wrong.

reply

You're correct about "train like you fight". They learn to fire wearing that armor because they will be wearing that in the field!

reply

Could just be some stupid FBI policy that they have to wear it on an FBI range for safety, so they did it for the movie. Any agents here know?

reply

Yes, I am an FBI agent well I'm in fact a Non Official Government agent but just so you know at the gun range we wear them for practice on the field because in most situations we wear vests when possible to try to save our LIVES!!

JUST KIDDING IM NOT IN THE FBI I WISH THAT WOULD GET ME LAID BUT Yeah hell no it's not for safety you gotta be joking!

More to make it more like real life action why shoot with no shirts when they will most likely be in fire wearing ballistic vests instead of no shirts!
