Eric's girlfriend was incredibly annoying

She really had some nerve giving him *beep* and making his home life miserable all because he had the integrity not to divulge classified information to her. Who the *beep* did she think she was? He's the one with the security clearance, not her. She was also extremely rude.

From a personality standpoint, she was easily the most unlikable character in the film. Hanssen, at least, had some redeeming personal qualities.

I sure hope Juliana was not as obnoxious and nosy a person in real life as she was depicted on screen.

She's his wife, and I think she had a right to be angry about their home life being so badly disturbed by this weird assignment (while not even knowing what the assignment was).

In real life, Eric (the real one) said that they fought all during this job even though she didn't have direct contact with Hanssen.

As has been said, she was and is his wife. How could you miss that fact when it's discussed often with Hanssen? Did you just click through the film?

And to say that Hanssen had some "redeeming personal qualities." What would they be? The way he harassed his assistant? His religious fanaticism? His superior attitude? The way he betrayed his family, his religion, and his country? Oh, yeah, nice guy. Maybe you should watch this again. Which is not a bad thing since I think it's a very well made, interesting film.

It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it. RIP Roger Ebert

Compassion, specifically for Eric's mother's health (even if Eric lied about her having Parkinson's), and genuine concern for Eric's marriage, officious as he might have went about expressing it.

Did you just "click" through the film? Maybe you should go back and watch it again because Eric growing to admire Hanssen for those very qualities is an important part of the plot for the first hour or so.

In contrast to Hanssen, Juliana didn't have any depth. All she did was make Eric's home life miserable, pressure him to share classified information with her in violation of federal law, snoop on his videotapes from work, and generally be so shrewish that Eric hard to quit his dream job because of her and her nosiness. Apparently, she thought there was some "wife exception" to confidentiality that gave her the right to be privy to the top-secret details of her husband's work, as if his security clearance was hers by right of marriage.

Juliana was the quintessential wet blanket.

reply

Oh yeah, that Hanssen was a saint, all right. Cause he expressed concern about Eric's mother's health. Too bad about those Russian counter spies who were working for the US; their health took a real downturn when they were shot.

I think Julia was rightfully concerned about the secretive, exhausting turn her husband's life was taking. You seem to have some issues with women in general and wives in particular.

I'm a woman, and I had a problem with her too. Not that her reactions were unrealistic, lots of people have them. But if I were Eric, I'd have ripped my hair out, with her demanding something I couldn't give her. No fair backing a man in a corner. She was in a tough spot, but it's not like she didn't know what she was getting into.

As for her concerns, there are better ways of expressing them.

I agree. She annoyed the *beep* out of me. My fathers a retired special agent for DOJ. There were numerous times when he told us he couldnt go into what he was doing at work. No one had a problem with it. He just had to tell us it was related to work and that was sufficiant.

reply

Yeah,I agree that she was really annoying. Her accent made her even more annoying IN MY OPINION.

reply

agreed. and about the accent too. she sounded ridiculous
