Hanssen trusted O'Neill because they were of the same religion?

I can understand the reasoning behind it. Although I'm not a Christian myself. Most of what I know about religion is the bad. Look at Hanssen, that guy sure was a fake Christian.

Well, a deeply flawed Christian, anyway. I love to watch this movie for the subscript. Part of it was how Hanssen was intrigued with O'Neill. Maybe he felt that "saving" O'Neill and bringing him back to the Church would atone for some of his own sins.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

He was a Catholic, not necessarily a Christian. Catholicism is a religion (often misrepresented as Christianity) whereas true Christianity is a personal relationship with Christ. I'm not saying someone can't be both but someone going to church, whether catholic or owise, doesn't automatically make them a Christian. The same way someone who goes to Staples Center doesn't make them a Los Angeles Laker. Catholics have their own beliefs, rituals, traditions and laws and pray to ppl (Mary, the saints, etc) that cannot hear their prayers bcuz they're not God. They are beloved of course, but they were only human.

Whether or not Robert's relationship with God transcended his religion wasn't determined altho he did seem sincere about it. At the same time, he was a a highly conflicted person making poor decisions. Nobody is perfect including Christians and who knows if Robert has found repentance in prison.

Catholics were the first Christians. Anybody who believes in Christ is a Christian. The whole "personal relationship with God" aspect of Christianity is an artifact of the Reformation and the splintering of the Western church into hundreds of different offshoots. And the Reformation happened 1500 years after the founding of Christianity.

@MettaQueensbridgeWarfare.

Christianity is a personal relationship with Christ.
Yeap!
Catholics have their own beliefs, rituals, traditions and laws and pray to ppl (Mary, the saints, etc)
To Bible believing Christians the bold is considered a SIN.You are ONLY suppose to pray and worship Jesus Christ not the saints and Mary(which as you pointed out Catholics pray to saints and Mary).

Where did you get your definition of Christianity? Catholicism was called Christianity centuries before born-again Protestants appeared on this earth. And no, they don't get to hijack the name.

It is definitely of the Catholic faith but it is still unequivocally incorrect and not biblical.

"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"

John 14:6

Funny it doesn't seem to say "except through me, my mom and the saints."

"For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,"

1 Timothy 2:5

Just one. Jesus. Why in the world would anyone go to anyone else when we have direct access to Jesus?

All paths lead to God.....as they say.

All paths lead to God in only one way- all will stand before God after they die and face judgement. (see Hebrews 9:27, Revelation 20:11-15)
