The job they described to O'Neil at the beginning is not the job they really expected of him. Yes, he wrote down everything Hansson did and reported back to his superiors. But in the end, he played a bigger role in springing the trap on Hansson.
How much did Hansson know? It's hard to say. By the time we meet him he is so far into his self destructive and psychotically paranoid behavior that he was less and less able to clearly function.
"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."
thanks still watching a bit confused but ur answer did Answer my original ?
shareLOVE this film. I've discussed it quite a bit over the years. Happy to do it some more. Let me know what you think of it at the end.

It's a great film. The type of film for me I rediscover on my shelf after a few years apparently, pop it in and have forgotten enough about it to be surprised by it again. It's a great break from the constant ACTION LOUD BANG BOOM CRASH! movies out there, which I also enjoy but differently.
I like the fact that since it's based on a true story and the way it was acted, shot and put together, I can more easily place myself in the shoes of the main character. He's not a superhero, he's an ordinary guy in a very confusing and tricky situation. Anyone who was bored by this film was in the mood for something more 'flashy' or didn't slip themselves in the characters shoes.
Hanssen had a new job created for him, sort of a promotion to nowhere, and needed a clerk. His bosses assigned him one. Hansen was certainly not told the clerk would be spying on him. He was wary, but figured he could intimidate and outsmart Eric enough to protect himself against any discoveries, accidental or otherwise.
shareHanssen had no idea O'Neill was turning him in. His last drop actually named O'Neill as a potential mole for the Russians. He completely trusted the guy.
I'm better than you.share
