He did it for the money. I'm a government employee and I could tell you the money is decent but it's not great. Hollywood movies would lead you to believe that people that work for the FBI's make a lot of money. I assure you they do not. If you read up on this guy he had a secret life that he grown accustom to. So he needed more money to finance it.
