Chris Cooper is a good actor, but am I the only one getting a bit tired of the same old stereotype?

In American Beauty, he's the ultimate in American ugliness. He hates his son, controls his wife, loves guns, is in denial about his own homosexuality, and oh yeah..... did I mention he's ex-military?

In Breach, he plays practically the same character. This time he hates everyone, belittles everyone, is a "sexual deviant", and oh yeah.... did I mention he's a devout Catholic?

Its well known that the Hollywood elite is completely liberal in their ideology. So be it. But when they use the same actor to recreate the same quasi-political propoganda over and over, its kind of ridiculous. Its almost like their is some cartoon running inside their head.

Come on, Hollywood. Think outside the box...its getting embarrassing.

I think he was perfect in both roles, and I assume he wanted to play both, 'stereotyping' notwithstanding.

Besides, haven't many actors been known over time for playing certain characters better and more often than others?

Propaganda? It's propaganda to have a character (one based on an actual person!)be a closed-minded bigot/closeted homosexual/person who doesn't practice what he preaches? How so? People like that really exist, you know.

Maybe if you watched more then two movies your dumb*ss would come to a different conclusion. Try Adaptation, where Chris Cooper plays a completely different character.

And what are you incoherently rambling about? Liberal ideology? These are two movies and you group them together like they were the only movies produced in Hollywood in the last decade. You are a *beep* idiot.

Maybe the word you are looking for is "typecast" not "stereotype"? I haven't seen American Beauty or Seabiscuit but maybe he plays that kind of character so well, that that's the parts he's being offered. I thought he was excellent in this movie.

Also don't forget Lonesome Dove where he plays the surley sheriff who leaves his wife to be killed by Indians and sells his son and his best friend to a murdering outlaw for a chaw of tobacco

(by the way Goomba, I'm being sarcastic. He plays a nice person in Seabiscuit and Lonesome Dove. Hence, proving the OP completely wrong)

Chris Cooper is possibly the only actor in Hollywood capable of portraying such complex characters with such authenticity. Don't forget his portrayal in "October Sky" of the mine manager in which he offers such a subtle blend of fortitude and fatalism. And his role as the sheriff in the small Kansas town in "Capote." The man has absolutely no ego. He seems to be drawn to these parts regardless of how "supporting" they are. Nevertheless, his performance always forms the foundation for the film's success.

You IMDb halfwits are missing the OP's point. He's not criticizing Chris Cooper, he's criticizing Hollywood's constant portrayal of this stereotypical Christian character that's hiding sexual perversion and other hypocrisy.

And "liberal ideology" is dead on accurate, no matter how badly you people want to deny it.

Not sure why your comment was a direct reply to mine when I never indicated that the OP was criticizing Chris Cooper. I simply pointed out that Chris Cooper has played a very wide and diverse number of roles and is not as type cast as the OP may have thought.

Yeah but to be fair most Republican males hate their son, control their wife, love guns, are in denial about their own homosexuality and either are or wish they were ex-military to the point that many enjoy roleplaying that fantasy in real life.

Robert Philip Hanssen was both a Catholic and the worst mole in our history. It's a true story. Hollywood was just telling it. If you think it's unfair you're just denying reality.
