FIERCE PEOPLE has been removed from LIONSGATE's publicity website and release list. When I asked them about it I was told that they had NO PLANS for a theatrical release and that the film had been "handed over" to the Home Entertainment department.
Oh, that's not good news at all. So I guess it goes straight to DVD. And the long saga to bring "Fierce People" to the screen (the big one, anyway) apparently comes to an end. :(
Now someone needs to tell Variety, Box Office Mojo, comingsoon.net et al.
Thanks for the info.

McCormack7, if you don't mind me asking, how recently have you spoken to LionsGate about Fierce People?
This latest bit of "release news" was only announced this past Thursday, February 8th (two days before your post) by multiple sources. Are you telling me that Variety, et al. have all got it wrong?
Oh oh. I can no longer find any websites that say that Fierce People will open this Friday, July 20th in N.Y. and L.A.
Has this film been pulled once again??? Please say it ain't so!
UPDATE: I have just read on comingsoon.net that Fierce People is now scheduled to open on September 7th in N.Y. and L.A. and expand to the top ten markets on September 14th. I feel better now.
No need to apologize to me larry-411. Your informative updates on this and other films (Into the Wild comes to mind) make an apology totally unnecessary.
I note with interest that After Dark Films is now listed as the distributor of Fierce People. Did they buy the rights from Lionsgate or are they just part of that company?
Also, would you know whether South Florida, where I live, is a top ten market? It would be nice not to have to travel to see this film, although I confess that the September release date does make me a little nervous cause that's right in the middle of hurricane season! Sigh -- even though it's been fifteen years, my memories of Hurricane Andrew are still fresh and clear.
Thanks so much for the kind words -- so many movies, so little time.
After Dark and Lionsgate signed a 3-year partnership recently which has them distributing a certain number of each others' pictures each year. So they are affiliated, yes.
South Florida is not a top 10 market, unfortunately, although films are often distributed more long the lines of which markets they think the film will do best in as opposed to a strict following of the top 10 in terms of population. So "top 10" doesn't necessarily mean that it won't play South Florida, although I tend to think it won't.

If the film was deemed poor in quality they would have dumped it in the middle of the summer to be buried by all the blockbusters. The fact is, they did exactly the opposite. They took it OUT of the middle of summer so it WOULDN'T get buried because they DO believe in the film.
They moved it to a weekend where it has a chance.

Thanks so much tmjjbright. I truly appreciate it. These past few weeks have been chock full of release date changes for films I've been following -- my head is spinning!

I don't really know, RP. It opens in NY & LA at first, then it will expand a week later from what I understand. If it goes to just the top 10 markets, Sacramento would not be included. But it's far too early to tell.
