Entertaining as hell, but mentally I wanted James Coburn as Osborne
I got hella kick out of this movie, it just had such deliciously offbeat stuff going on throughout. I mean, strange things just kept popping up out of nowhere, like the odd little sidebar explorations of the lives of the Iskanani tribe (which was made up but seemed so real!), the balloon race, Creamsicle, the nude blackmail picture and the "ex malo bonum" story, and other images and lines of dialogue that just seemed to come out of the blue. Beautifully filmed in and on the grounds of Hatley Castle, in Victoria, B.C., too, BTW.
But I couldn't stop thinking how much I would have liked to see James Coburn playing the part of old man Osborne (Donald Sutherland's part). I thought Sutherland did a pretty good job, but I think the film would have been helped with a more bastardy old bastard that only James Coburn could have played. But alas, Coburn died in 2002, a good while before this film was made, so I guess it's a moot point. Sigh...
