Bryce

This character is one of the films mai problems imo. The sudden revelation of his true character was too abrupt. I spent the second half of the movie going 'WTF?' because of him. I recognize that in real life reveleations like that are just as abrupt but I think it wouldve benefitted the movie to explore that side of Bryces character in greater depth. Maybe if they had done that the sudden character shift wouldnt have taken me out of the movie so much.

I also wondered when/how Odgen came to accept what his grandson had done and how he knew about what happened between Bryce and his father. I wish the movie wouldve taken a longer look at that.

The movie just felt unfinished to me because of these things.

well, you said it yourself. it's an independent movie, so it doesn't really operate the way typical Hollywood movies do that always lay on thick with the foreshadowing with colors, music, unsubtle hints and other effective, if somewhat condescending towards the viewer cinematic tricks. so in that sense, it *was* very life like, one minute everything is perfect and magical, the next, an outside force throws you a curve ball. it's especially true of teenagers who think they know and understand everything.
As for Ogden, he already suspected that his grandson has shot his father and seemed to have come to terms with this. It wasn't the first dirty family secret they buried.
The story is told in a first person narrative and since the author of the book has written the script he probably insisted they keep to that as much as possible and don't stray too far with the side plots.
Chris Evans was fantastic in this and he does create a solid portrayal of a character without having the script spell out every single thing.

I did like the change in Bryce from slightly crazy good guy to all around wild evil guy. really how fuqed up do you have to be to rape your sisters boyfriend. act like you are his best friend before and after the attack. then kill your dad and grand dad
