The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is simply one of the most beautiful films ever made. The cinematography and direction are simply phenomenal. It is a true wonder how the camera was able to capture many of the small details and images in the characters' head. Julian Schnabel is really an amazing director and this is his best film without a doubt. It's all brilliant work, and I am almost upset because it did not win for Director or Cinematography. Now to the character himself, Jean-Dominique Bauby 'Jean-Do'. He was a very complex individual, who is actually not a very rational person. But I was able to sympathize with him on every step of the way. His memories and his imagination were so vivid and realistic, the way the film captures them is really beautiful in a very poetic and surreal way. Mathieu Amalric really gives an extraordinary performance that was worthy of more recognition. All the performances were captivating. The film also is not overly-sentimental or sappy, and is actually not depressing. I was sad for him, but I think the lesson we learn from life is to never feel sorry for oneself, and I think the film was really an inspiring piece of work. This is a majestic Motion Picture that deserves all the recognition it got, and possibly one of the best foreign films ever made. Experience this film.
