'Johnny got his gun' anyone

Although I haven't seen this movie, the premise reminds me of Dalton Trumbos "Johnny got his gun" in which a soldier loses all use of his senses, as well as his arms and legs but is kept alive by doctors.

The film follows his struggle to re-establish communications with the world around him.

Am I missing the mark with this comparison?

"What's truth got to do with it?"
"What's truth got to do with anything?"

I think it was Roger Ebert who mentioned "Johnny Got His Gun" in his review of this movie.

Somewhat similar situations, but I found the movies to be very different in the story and tone. I liked this one better.

I should hope the story is told more skillfully, 36 years later...

Date of filming shouldn't make any difference. Many olfer, classic even silent films are well told. Has nothing to do with the age of the film.

Frnankly, having seen both films when they came out in theaters, I see little resemblence.

When Bauby spells out what he wants: D-E-A-T-H I was reminded of Johnny Got His Gun. Other than that, the movies are quite different in tone. Presumably, the books are as well, although I haven't read TDBATB.

Johnny got his Gun I've only read the book!
but the in the book the dude is just a torso
this dude is just paralyzed

ITS SOOO SAD!

reply

Yes, both stories are sad, but in TDBATB"s defense, it triumphs over "Johnny" stressing and celebrating the fact that the hero's imagination and memory are still intact, and can soar beyond his locked-in syndrome physical condition. Physically disabled and inhibited, yes, but it's the inner human spirit that triumphs in the end!

reply

Yes I was led to that after my foray into this subject; Another one is "look up for yes" this poor woman languished for 6 years before anyone realized she could understand and feel everything but couldn't speak!

reply

yes but TDBATB is a true story......

"Look up for yes" is a true story also and her name was Julie or Julia Tavaloro and she "lived" her whole life thereafter in a hospital in New York--Roosevelt island I think

Another is the excellent but not widely known Australian film, "Dance Me To My Song" remarkably written and acted by an actress with severe cerebral palsy ...a very uplifting experience.

But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.

reply

I really wish that one would come out on dvd.

reply

Yeah, this movie reminded me Johnny Got His Gun, but also Mar adentro (The Sea Inside), My Left Foot, and to some extent a great mexican film from the early 90's called El bulto (Excess Baggage).

Watch all of them, they all are wonderful films.

Same concept, completely different point.
It's comparable, in the same way that Se7en can be compared to The Cell, because they're both about a serial killer.
It's well worth watching.
