Hi everyone. Does anyone know what this apparatus is? With the smoke or whatever gas that is coming out of the hose? Was it to help him breathe? I've never seen this object before and I haven't seen anyone else mention it, so thanks in advance!

I don't know if you are still reading this, but OK.
It is an air humidifier, what comes out is not smoke but water vapour (i.e. steam).
Hospitals can have very dry air which will irritate the nose, throat and windpipe. And Jean-Do is of course completely paralysed, so he can't even cough or simply clear his throat. Like most of us do, many times a day. So the extra moist air should keep him more comfortable.
