question about main guy's girlfriend... SPOILERS

...Was it her that finally showed up after he had his second stroke (or whatever happened to him that finally led to his death)? Can anyone who's read the book tell me if his girlfriend ever did visit him?

reply

Ah, that wasn't a second stroke (why is everyone missing this) he had caught pneumonia and yes, I believe that was her...she was a brunette.

I don't think she ever visited him. That was his imagination, and in it she said something like: You know I've always been here. On the phone she said she loved him but wanted to remember him the way he was. Then she began sobbing about how difficult it was for HER.

That's what I think. Or that he was delusional right at the end. Either way, she wasn't really there.

In the book, he refers to talking to her on the phone once. I read an interview with his wife and she said that the girlfriend never visited him... and she's heard that she hates the film as well....

I read an article that in real life, the girlfriend visited alot; much more than the "wife" (she never was married to him, but I'll use that title anyway). The wife showed up with the children every three weeks or so but the girlfriend was there almost every day. That is one of the reasons she doesn't like the movie, because she was portrayed so negatively and unfairly.

Have not seen the movie, but the only mention of Florence post-stroke is when he's dreaming of the wax museum and he enters the room which resembles his hospital room. In this narration he sees all those who have been, as he describes, members of the personal bodyguards that sprang up after the disaster. Florence is mentioned as one of them in a brief sentence.

Read the real story

Link does not work and salon is worse than reading the national enquirer. Don't think you'll get the truth there.

The link worked fine for me as well. The real story was implied in the director's commentary, in which he tactfully implied that the girlfriend was the one who was at the hospital all the time, not the wife, but because the Bauby family owned the rights to the story, this is the way it had to be told.

The link worked fine for me. I used google and found the article. In spite of the other poster claiming Salon is not a reputable site, I found nothing wrong with the article. I recommend it to anyone wanting to hear the other side. It correlates nicely with the article in The Guardian.
