Terribly dissapointed(some spoilers!)

Well... When I saw the trailer, i was so moved... But when I saw the movie. Not that the movie itself was so terrible, but first of all it didn't explain so much about his life. And he was kinda... well one would think that when his wife stood by him after all the Bsh*t... He would kinda appreciate that but no, instead he would just cry how much he missed his fling(who never came to visit him)and infront of his wife!...

I thought he would understand how much his family ment to him and the important things in life, but he never seemed to get that, not for his kids nor for his wife. It was like he just missed frolicing around, not LIFE, not his family...

But since it's based on a true story, I guess it had to be so... if it was so in real life. But then I don't really feel so sorry for this guy. It's one thing if your marriage is over... but when she still comes to visit you and does everything for you, you would think that one would realize OMG what a mistake I've done... Or even if not(if there just isn't any love for her in that way anymore) at least say thanks or somehow remember her in your book. But no... So it wasn't really touching.

I couldn't really feel sorry for him. The trailer really fooled me, so I guess they did a good job marketing this film. But all the awards etc.. whatta F? Yeah it's amazing how he could write a book like that and overcome his condition in a way and I suppose no one really deserves that, but... this guy was a, well I will not say it(a little respect for the dead) but he wasn't such a great guy, cuz even if you don't love your wife anymore, a little respect please. After all she did for him... "She is just the mother of my children" like that means nothing... Cause I have been going through a lot of bad things right now and I thought this movie would somehow raise my spirit, but it didn't... It just made me more sad. Great job editing and directing I guess, since like I said it's based on a "true story" so they cannot really change it to be the "happy hollywood ending", but for me it was a dissapointment. And that is my opinion, you can dissagree but then they shouldn't market the film like they did, because the trailer was nothing like te film really. So that's why I feel fooled.

Never go into a French movie hoping it'll make you feel more positive about life. X) haha
I had no preconceptions about this movie and really liked it for the cinematics and emotion it conveyed. I really felt like I understood a little bit of how he felt in his situation, which was neat.
People who said it made them feel positive about life are probably the ones who like to see how bad it could be and then feel good about the fact that it isn't that bad for them. If you're not that kind of person then, other than beautiful scenery, you probably wouldn't leave this movie in a particularly positive frame of mind.

I am that kind of person who felt really scared about it. Far from being positive. Just scared that something like this can happen to me or to someone close to me. Enough said.

same here but i think it was because how the movie was made, great directing job by julian schnabel, made you really felt the entrapment feeling that buby had, 20 min into the film i felt sofocated by buby's point of view, the movie was great, not in the "hollywood moral point of view" but in the "french life sucks and we have no escape" made me feel the regrets that buby had by thinking that what if that happens to me or anybody close to me

yeah it sucked from top to bottom. The story was not inspirational cause he was not a good person and the artistic quality was poor. The Sea Inside blows this away in terms of artistry and inspiration.

This movie was a masterpiece for exactly that reason. The man took life for all that it had to offer! He cared nothing about anything other than the sensual experience life had to offer, which is why the dramatic irony is that this is exactly what was taken from him. No, this was not the "My God, I've realized the error of my ways, let's all be better people after watching this movie," kind of film. The message of this film is to start appreciating everything you've ever had, including this moment, because that could be all you ever have.

It was also this zest for life that kept so many people magnetized to him in spite of what we might view as ethical flaws.

Hi to everyone...

I did not wish to start a new post but thought of just adding my point to this post as I really thought the end was disappointing. Maybe because I've been seeing a lot many 'happy ending' movies. I chose to see this movie at a low point of my life. Maybe I thought this could be inspiring. But after watching this movie, I think this movie is neither depressing nor inspirational. It's just a story about a head-to-toe paralyzed guy wishing to tell his story of his life. I did not find anything in his story inspirational as such. It was just his story and I duly respect him for that.

The only pain staking activity (apart from living through this pain under Jean-Do's skin) is the way the story was written. That WAS painstaking. However, in today's age, some alternative method may prove useful. But yes, at that period of time, the method used in the movie was effective in communication.

It's just my opinion but I don't think I would watch this movie again.

Yes, Buby did not intend to inspire anyone. He simply told his story one letter at a time.
What I liked about him, is that he was not religious and managed to point out the hypocrocy of Lourdes. In fact he had a sexual relationship there, but could not stand the phoney haloed Mary. Funny and made me smile.

i reallly liked the fact that he wasnt an overall good guy. He was just an average guy who found all his pleasures in sex and superficial relations with varios women. So i liked the comparison of his life when all he did was rely on sexuality for pleasure and his life now that he is paralyzed and is forced to rely on his imagination for pleasure and joy. His relationships are also somewhat more meaningful than they were prior to his stroke. Like someone said in another forum "his stoke was his chance for redemption." But i wasnt moved to tears as some have been though is was still emotional for me. I guess it didnt draw me in well enough or i just wasnt paying attention.

I am sorry you are going through personal problems but the movie is honest. I found him disgusting as well but I appreciate an honest movie over Hollywood bs lalaland that makes people delusional with unreachable expectations of other humans. That's the main reason I turn to foreign films. It's life. Just because he is now handicap it doesn't mean he will be attracted to his ex wife all of a sudden or care about anyone except himself. Life is not that simple. Actually it really is simple, but in a more depressing way I suppose lol.

Not to defend the guy, he did cheat on his ex-partner (never married) and left her for Ines (Florence in real life), but the director took some wild liberties with that part of the story.
In the book, and in real life, his ex was barely around after he had his accident. She wasn't even in the country when he died and was dating someone else. His lover was actually by his side the whole time. Sylvie de la Rochefoucaud (Celine in the movie) overlooked the making of the movie and definitely got her revenge there... I mean, the guy is dead, at least respect his memory and don't try to lie to make yourself feel better. Just my opinion, I know it's not all black and white.
