I just watched this movie last night and I was amazed at all the bad reviews and views of this movie. It wasn't quite as funny as I had imagined, but it was noirishly beautiful. Connie Nelson's deep, soft, sexy voice reminded me of Lauren Bacall; the ending, while somewhat predictable in who I thought would end up with the movie, was very unpredictable in how it happened. Best of all, the movie ended up with a funny and hopeful ending, something you don't always get in noir. Simply underrated.
Yeah, totally underrated. It's one of those movies where you really have no idea what's going to happen next and where it'll take you by the end. But, in my opinion, in a good way. If the individual scenes weren't so fresh and satisfying, and if the plot and character information weren't doled out in regualr doses, I'd probably get annoyed with the slow pace and lack of forward momentum. Instead, the patient viewer is rewarded with an original and clever little movie. Nothing spectacular, but also totally undeserved of its bad reputation. It's a great one-time viewing.
A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.
I'm not saying that this was a bad movie, but here's the thing- I can realize that it wasn't the best. It was a perfectly middle-of-the-road movie, with no pretensions toward greatness.
A perfect comic vehicle for Cusack, Thornton, and Oliver Platt (who, by the way, made the movie worth watching).

And it's a long drive to that prison, baby, just you and me. No witnesses.
I thought this was a fantastic movie if paid attention to throughout, the acting didn't stagger at all and great comic role from Oliver Platt as well. Not much can be complained about this movie, even the character development was great.
I remember anxiously awaiting for this to come out with a friend. Then it got a bunch of bad reviews and he decided we shouldn't go and since he was my ride I had no other way of going. Then I finally got to rent it and thought it was great.
I really think the only reason so many people hated it is the previews all said "Hilarious" and that's what they expected going in. Not "Hilarious" but just damn funny. I think John Cusack best described it on Letterman: "A Film Noir with a lot of laughs."
