I know the movie obviously wouldn't have had a chance if they left town right away, but if the whole idea was to take the money and run before the boss figured it out, why "wait a few hours and act normal"?
Somehow or another, I just didn't get what their excuse was.
It was lame. The weather. The roads were icy and according to weatherman Billy Bob it would clear in time for them to leave early morning. Of course it seems to have stopped raining and completely thawed in a short amount of time. One second the car is spinning around due to ice and after a short while the roads are fine.
It would look suspicious if they didn't follow their regular routine. But by leaving Christmas, no one would miss them until later on the 26th, and by then, they'd be long gone.
When Charlie asks Vic why they couldn't leave now, Vic says it's a hockey rink out there, but "they say" the rain is supposed to stop by midnight, so by 5 am they'll be in Kansas City, where they'll enjoy a leisurely breakfast by the airport and by 8 am they'll be on a plane to someplace warm where it's "against the *beep* law to rain, okay? Click. Bzzz." Haha. Then Cusack loses control of his car a bit and we all agree, yes, wait, it's dangerous and you're too pretty to die, John!
I'd say it's more likely that Vic was just waiting for Renata to get off work and simply laid out the weather concerns as the reason, and Charlie went along with it being kind of spineless.
Yes, I feel this is the reason, barryshaft. For all these whiners who b**ch about this movie and say, "I don't undertand the plot! Why did this characther do this? Why didn't they do that? " The answer is, almost every character is lying and manipulating other characters. No-one is reliable. If this creates anxiety and upsets your little but-this-is-not-what-I-expect-in-a-movie-universe sensibility, tough titties, baby!! Grow up- this is NOIR!!!
I totally agree with you Oskiros-Arg. It seemed like it should be a great movie with the cast and the story at hand. I just kept watching thinking it was leading me somewhere but it never did. I was definitely let down and I don't think that I will ever be watching it again. It's sad that John Cusack was involved in such a let downer.
