2 million?

I know it's Kansas, but is stealing 2 million really enough to make Cusak's character risk all that and have to run away from his job and city? He seemed like a big shot around town and I assume his job as a big time lawyer for the mob brought home a hefty paycheck.....why would he go through all of this for 2 million bucks? I don't get it.

The whole point the the film is that Cusak's character (and pretty much all the characters) are miserable with their lives and they would do anything to feel something. Charlie steals the money because he knows he is just going to die anyway and he wants to have some kind of excitement.

LOL. High 5 figures? As an attorney? As an attorney for the mafia? I'm sure he was making considerably more than that. Did you see the inside of his (former) house? People only making $100k per year do not live like that. I would estimate $250k - $500k income. Especially since he also had enough prestige for the police to suck up to him.

And don't forget, the money would be split between him and Vic. 1 or 2 million is hardly enough to run away to a tropical island. I agree with the original poster.

I think the figure was rather low-ball seriously. It wouldn't be for me, but a big-time lawyer? Yeah, that's pretty low. To be honest, my younger sister is a lawyer, and she would laugh at a figure that low (considering the risk). But either way, the movie was terrific in my opinion. It is probably a good idea to suspend your concept of reality to enjoy this movie fully.

i'm not sure how much of a difference this would make, but the book took place in 1979 so i suppose 2 million would be worth more, or maybe i'm wrong.

I doubt anyone would keep more than $2million (at least in one place). They could have had gold etc but then thy still need to sell that on. I also doubt you could easily carry much more than $2million. I was slightly surprised $2million dind't take up much volume. But to pull it off they still have to get it through customs or something (unless maybe private plane).

I have lived in tropcal places and you don't need much to live on.

They'll get bored and set up a fishing boat or sea taxi (like my friends uncle did).

I stayed in Viet Nam and Cambodia for $1-4 a night.

Yeah, 2 mil is a little low. Particularly if you agree with Bill Gerard that lawyers already have "a license to steal."
