if they had sold it as what it was-- a dark noir with some comedic moments-- maybe oliver platt and cusack would have gotten the nominations they deserved.

Exactly! This is one of the best cases of poorly marketing a film that I know. In fact, the DVD I picked up of it is marked "comedy." Ugh! A fantastic film, however.
Yep. After being a fan of this movie for years I actually just saw the trailer for the first time. They completely sold this movie the wrong way. It's one of those movies I stumbled up while flipping channels. If I had seen that trailer before the movie I probably would have been disappointed. It doesn't even come close to fitting the mood in the film.
