... that he was being played all along? That he was allowing Vic and Renata to believe he was sort of spineless?

Or did he not put it all together until he saw that cash in Renata's closet, therefore giving him the incentive to shoot her?

He was suspicious. Remember how he kept telling Renata he had something to ask her and he just "didn't have it yet."? Something was telling him to not trust her but he couldn't put it all together. He finally asks her the question right before he sees the cash.
