I honestly felt that this movie could have done without his character.

Every time the movie focused on one of his sub plots or mini-dramas, I felt disconnected from the movie somehow. I felt like I was watching another movie.

Then when the movie got back to the main plot I felt like it took me a while to connect again.

In contrast to Cages character, Leto's just didn't seem to belong in the movie. Or least not as much of it. It almost became a side movie, which I wasn't interested in after a certain point.

Now I know it's always good to mix in a bit of personal chaos, but I just don't feel like it worked in this movie.

I really can't put my finger on it... But if I were to compare it to another movie, I would liken it to Goodfella's and Liotta's character. Had Goodfellas not been as good as it was, Liotta's depiction of Hill probably would have been enough to ruin the movie. IMO anyway.

That was the point, he didn't belong in Yuri's life, in that business, and Yuri was blind to it. That's what inevitably cost his life. I liked the contrast between the characters and the way they both reacted to the moral repercussions of being an arms dealer. He was a necessary counterpoint to Cage's character.

I suppose it was meant to be like that, but I just felt like it didn't work tho.

I though he was just girl candy. When guys would like the action. The girls could look at. He was a cutie back then. It was strange that he got second building. I am glad he died a hero. I almost cried.

His character was stupid, I mean he was trying to stop that arms deal when it was obvious he would end up dead, boohoo another dead junky, also his moral crusade was flawed - the woman and boy got cut to pieces by machetes so stopping the guns trade wouldn't have saved them anyway or likely the other villagers who would have been cut to pieces, he was on the whole a quite irritating character if I was Yuri I would have shot him myself.

Good film but he would not have been missed.

I think somehow Yuri knew that Vitaly would end up day someday.
