Why was Nicholas Cage emotionless?

He seems self-centered throughout the whole movie. As an older brother he put his younger kid brother in arms way. Even though his wife is a trophy and also somewhat shallow he didnt care for her that much. Even his own son and parents he didnt care for. Its like he was living in a bubble and just cared only for himself and his thirst for invincibility.

I think when his brother died. His soul died with him and he just didn't care as he was the best at his job.

I agree. Yuri isn't a moral man, he cares for his family but he's not moral and he's pretty shallow. He's a classic psychopath if you ask me. He's extremely intelligent, charming, lacks morality, and really doesn't relate well to normal people. When his brother dies he realized how messed up his life is, and he feels horrible about it. But he's got a big ego, and he won't kill himself. So he'll keep on doing what he knows how to do because he wants to feel big.

Yep. at that point he was pretty much dead inside (with the whole, "i would tell you to go to hell, but i think your already there" line that Ethan Hawke said near the end) as everything he cared about was completely gone.

he was dead to his mom/dad, his brother was dead, his wife/son left him and he basically triggered it all by taking his bro with him on one last job and he was lying to his wife and especially when that painting she done was supposedly sold to some 'anonymous rich buyer' type thing and she knew he even lied to her about that. it just pushed her over the edge and she left as their marriage was basically a lie.

at that point all he had left was the job itself.

that pretty much sums up the emotionless question the OP asked. he was just so cold and his soul was running on empty at that point. it was probably difficult for him to even cry etc.

Martialbro5,

Why do people like you answer SPOILER FREE posts with SPOILERS???? Fortunately, I've just finished watching this movie, but for all those who come to check out the movie by looking at supposed spoiler free threads to see what viewers thought on the boards who come across your post will hate you just a tiny bit.

"... he put his younger kid brother in arms way"
you mean, he hugged him? :-)

He realizes the world can't be changed. When his brother was trying to prevent the arms deal, there was no point. They would have just gone and killed them with machetes.

Gun runners ARE a necessary evil. Why? Because without guns, conflicts would not be resolved by any other means. Communication cannot solve problems. The only true way to solve a problem is with blood. Even then, the problems are never truly solved.

Some good, elaborate answers there! I was gonna say Nicolas Cage acts like that in every single movie, but oh well...

I imagine any arms dealer would have to be. Amoral as well. Look at what they do. They don't 'take sides' they 'take the higher bid.'
