I just realised what it reminded me of:
The best trainers/warriors invited to tournament - where they are pitted against eachother/Mewtwo - and where there is an engineered super fighter Hayate/Mewtwo on an island.
I haven't seen Pokemon in years but thought there were similar approaches in this movie, nevertheless, I really enjoyed Dead or Alive.

You do have a point. But here's a nother plotline to consider.
3 fighters, the best of their kind, invited to fight in an underground tournament in a remot island.
1 Wants to find the killer of someone close to him/her.
1 Wants to prove he/she's worthy and not just a fake.
1 is just there because they want someone/something.
Eventually they must face off against someone that has the skills of all the people past defeated.
Sounds like DOA right? It's actually Mortal kombat as well.
