Not if you didn't go into specific details. So, no.
I'll shove that bat up your ass and turn you into a popsickle
-Ajax The Warriors (1979)
it felt like an insult to the game and especially the characters. But when you ignore that it's a fun film to see.

I think Kane Kosugi was the only decent cast choice for one of the DOA characters, especially since his family is familar with doing movies in the Ninja genre.
shareWhile the game series itself doesn't all that seriously(Beach Volleyball game. Nuff said!) it does take it's fighting seriously. That's why it disapointed me they decided to add some weird sound effects during fights in the movie. Other wise the movie straddles some of the same lines the game does between the comepletely ridiculous characterization and overly dramatic relationships. There is a change of attitudes, fighting styles and motivations in some characters, wich might tick off fans of the games, and the antagonists scheme is...worst than one might expect. Otherwise it's a fun B/C grade Martial Arts action flick with lots of T and A. Check your brain at the door and have a good time.
"They might think it's deranged
But they won't give it a thought
Once I've eaten their brain"
By itself its a pretty decent movie...
When it comes versus the game, well the probleme is that DOA have a mixed story, a completely serious side with the Ninjas and DOATEC, and a funny cheesy side with Tina and Zack for exemple, but in the movie they try to mix it and it give a weird result.
As for the characters, when some are really nicely done (Ayane, Zack, Bass, Leon, Hayate) others are really far from there source material, Ryu is not even in a ninja suit, Christie trade her cold heart assassin white hair in a femme fatal suit for a pretty funny blonde...Helena who was originally a classy opera singer in a beautifull dress become a nice sporty girl on roller... Kasumi and Tina stay close to the character exept they cast the wrong actress for them.
So well it depends...
Just watched it...I expected this to be terrible since games to movies are generally, as a rule, really bad (Mario brothers...-shudder-). I'm not a massive fan of DoA before I say anything that offends...The movie was pretty enjoyable, silly pretty girls, well choreographed fight scenes and a few laughs here and there...Not the best not the worst. I don't know the DoA story that well but if you don't go in in typical fan manner 'OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE THEY DONE WITH ALL THE CANS?" sort of thing you might enjoy it...If you're a big fan expecting a perfect reproduction you'll probably be disappointed. I've yet to see any film that translates a game even 80% successfully. Enjoy it for what it is and don't get too caught up in how untrue to the game it is...just think of super mario brothers...
shareIt was waaay too americanized (sorry for the generalistic use of words, but that's how I felt it).
Too much focus on weird relationsships, lame jokes misunderstood sexually, misplaced comic relief, too much focus on half-naked chicks fighting (which is important, but there should be more in the movie than that)
"I did not care for the Godfather" - Peter Griffin
The fighting style were kind of similar
