Should Have Been Titled Differently

I walked out the theater, shaking my head that this higher budget 2005 remake of the 1976 original ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 did not measure up.

With the passage of time and re-watching the movie tonight my opinion is more objective. The 2005 version is actually a decent action movie on its own. Had the movie been titled differently without any connection to the 1976 original then I might have felt more positively towards it back in 2005.

The 1976 John Carpenter lower-budget original was, well, for lack of a better term, 'original'. It was a psychological-social commentary. In some ways it was avante garde. The 1976 original was notorious for depicting a senseless child murder, something unacceptable with today's film censors.

Back in 2005 I didn't like the plot which depicted cops killing cops, even though the bad guys were corrupt cops. The 1976 original was clear good versus evil. But that's neither here nor there. After rewatching Assault on Precinct 13 (2005), I can now say that I enjoyed it.

I know, I was wondering the same thing. The plot was rather different to the original, not to mention the style, setting, atmosphere, etc. Why couldn't they have just titled it differently and said it was "inspired" by AOP13? Would've made more sense and wouldn't have been bashed as much for diverging so far from the original.

We call this the Loom of Fate.
