Not really a remake is it?

I watched the original yesterday, and saw this remake when it came out in 2005. As far as I can tell, it has different characters, a different plot, the only similarity is that it features a siege in a police station. Did they call it a remake just because otherwise critics would point out this similarity and claim it to be a rip off? Or did John Carpenter have a hand in this new one and this is how he would have liked to have made it?

I agree, its pretty much a remake only in name and premise.

Then again, had the film been released under a different title, people would be calling this a rip-off.

No, it's not really a re-make and that is probably why I applaud the effort despite it's failings. The premise is the same, but we get totally different characters and more background is filled in. Of course I don't think I could watch this over and over as I have watched John Carpenter's version, but I still enjoyed the movie.

Some remakes I'm thankful come off like sequels rather than remakes. Including PROM NIGHT (2008) and FRIDAY THE 13TH (2009).
