Why didn't the General become Hatsumomo's danna

I always wondered.

Give the general a little credit for being perceptive. That's why he was probably a general. Hatsumomo was beautiful and charming when she wanted to be, and possibly good in bed. But she was a cold, unappealing, unaffectionate woman at her core. The general was perceptive enough to detect this and smart enough not to get too close to Hatsumomo.

In the book he was, but only for a short time. Like everyone else, after a while her found her intolerable.

No one wanted a high-maintenance geisha. Besides, she drank and probably didn't want to be exclusive with a danna because she loved somebody else who couldn't financially be her danna.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

because she angered an owner of a teahouse. because of that no one was allowed to become her danna.
