shareNo, they sell their art, not their bodies. They make as much money and more than college graduates with degrees and always have, they don't HAVE to be prostitutes. And realistically, 95% of prostitutes are people who absolutely need a way to make money who don't have very good jobs. Why would geisha choose to be prostitutes when they're already from the upper-middle class? That isn't to say that at some point, several geisha have have sex for large amounts of money, because I'm absolutely sure they have. But a majority of them have never committed an act of prostitution. It isn't part of their job and it has nothing to do with the geisha profession.

Mizuage was a ceremony undergone by a maiko, where a man paid money for the privilege of having sex with the apprentice geisha; this also signified her coming of age.
I wonder if they stopped this practice? Because paying money for sex is prostitution, even once.
The practice of Mizuage no longer happens in Japan since prostitution is illegal. Now, a Maiko must complete 4 or 5 years of training until they're deemed ready to become a full geisha. There is some kind of ceremony, but she's no longer required to sell her virginity.

No. In the book it says it is the geisha's choice if she wants to have sex, even with her danna.
