QUATERmain NOT QUARTERmain!!

Just like in the Chamberlain movies, these moron actors can't even pronounce the protagonist's name correctly. Can't they read the script? And what's wrong with the director? (It reminds me of Stargate: SG-1, where there are at least six different pronunciations of "Goa'uld.")

If I remember correctly, John Rhys-Davies actually pronounced the name correctly toward the beginning of the 1985 movie, but then descended into the same mindless ignorance as the other actors.

Much as I would like to agree with you on that one, Henry Rider Haggard (the original author) used both spellings of Allan's surname, Quatermain and Quartermain. He wrote many many novels around AQ and his son besides KSM - it just so happens that he used Quatermain in the first one! Plus it's probably not as natural to pronounce it that way.

Still, wish they'd just get over it and drop the R.

"Fried cheese...with club sauce."

I'm really interested to know now I've read your post - how exactly do you pronounce it? As in, could you write it like the do in the dictionary? You know, like "silly" would be "sill - ee" etc. I mean, is it "kwuter-main" and not "kwarter-main" or what?

This has actually been a big question with me for awhile!

Regardless of the spelling, is the character's name meant to be pronounced KWAY-ter-main or KWA-ter-main? Or is it a different pronounciation completely?

reply

Lol, and he still hasn't replied to me!!

Um...Who cares , who really makes their life revolve around a stupid movie and how something is pronounced....

Jeeze

Who spends their life downloading *beep* of azureus? *beep* idiot.

i do , so suck on that.

There's simply no comeback to something so stupid that it makes no sense. Here we are discussing the pronunciation of a word, and you're telling to to get a life ... a life which involves downloading stuff of Azureus. As it happens, I do that plenty too, but I don't name myself after it. Balance your priorities, your life doesn't have to revolve around one thing.

Did that take you the whole one and a month to come up with?

I actually own League of E.G., and am currently watching King Solomon's Mines. Throughout both movies, I hear it pronounced "kwa-ter-man/main" and "kwar-ter-main". The one that seems to be used most is "kwa-ter-main", so I pronounce his last name with that pronounciation. I hope that answers your question.

I can't actually hear a difference when I say both words.
Must be because I'm Canadian.

reply

Yeah, I was going to suggest we all just pronounce either spelling with a British accent; then they sound the same anyway. :)
