Sometimes it takes awhile but I eventually figure out the joke. I remember Pearl Bailey. She was an old-time singer. Saw her on talk shows when I was a kid. Black broad. But I don't get why they'd name the high school after her. Maybe it was just a case of "pick the first name that pops into your head", although she had been dead for almost 15 years when the first ep aired.

Considering that the show takes place in fictional Langley Falls, Virginia; it's quite possible that they chose Pearl because she was born in Newport News, Virginia.
So not only is she famous, and an inspiration, but also from the same state that the show takes place in.
Anyone have any insight on this...?
She also has a musical theater background, and Seth is a big fan of the arts. (The guy is a song and dance man himself, and quite talented).

Very insightful response, Final. I never really looked into the origin of that name, but it makes a lot of sense in the context you're describing. If true, it might be the most reverential and least joke-y school name in any adult-oriented sitcom.

I never really did either, until the question was asked. I knew who Pearl Bailey was, I just kind of assumed it was like "James Woods High" from Family Guy.
But the added element of her being from Virginia seems like more thought was given to the context of the name.

Yes, Newpicnictime's right. Thanks for the insightful, plausible reasons. The Seth being a "song and dance man", really (pardon the expression) "resonates" with me. Although, he could've called it Louis Armstrong High, on and on. I don't remember if Pearl Bailey had a hit or theme song she was famous for. She must have. Maybe that was a favorite of Seth's growing up...? (I just googled it: Two to Tango in 1952 was her biggest hit. Doesn't ring a bell with me.)
Have an update for you, Pearl Bailey was referenced in "Family Guy" as well in Season 2, Episode 7 "The King is Dead".
Cleveland said "I've never hugged a celebrity before. Except for Pearl Bailey at a book signing once but then we later found out it wasn't actually her." It doesn't really have much to do with American Dad!, but is a bit of an odd reference to throw out there.
Possibly one of the writers or Seth admires Pearl?
