I just don't get the inexplicable popularity of this show...

Perhaps it'a a sign of the times when a show like Corner Gas becomes so popular, at least in Canada. As a Canadian, what can I interpret from this? That there are a hell of a lot of unimaginative conservative citizens in our country? That television is so bad in general that by comparison Corner Gas is the only show marginally worth watching? Or are all these rabid fans biased because they're related to Brent Butt? I'll concede that last one was a stretch...

Canada has had success from time to time with comedies like Red Green, Kids in the Hall, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Trailer Park Boys, etc, but with sitcoms... not so much. We can do satire, we can do mockumentaries, we can even do late-night, and some of the best comedians out there are Canadian. So why can't we get a sitcom right??

I've seen maybe 6 or 7 episodes of Corner Gas. I tried to give it a chance. 6 or 7 episodes may not sound like much but if a show can't make a person laugh after 2 or 3 episodes (allowing for the occasional "bad" episode), that's usually a bad sign. Frankly, I think I was being generous. To get right down to it; this show is just downright BLAND. Every single joke falls flat, every character is dirivative and one-dimensional, and the writing is clumsy and unimaginative. A sitcom has to take some chances and at least *attempt* to be witty and relevant, but that just isn't the case here. To paraphrase BloodTheTelepathicDog's review of this show; If a joke's incoming punchline is obvious it won't be funny when it comes. Corner Gas is full of the worst kind of dry, conservative, uninspired "humor"; it doesn't take ANY chances and simply doesn't deserve the awards and accolades it has recieved. I'd honestly rather sit quietly and watch paint dry... Just my opinion...

I watched one or twos episode about 2 years ago, and avoided ever since....well until a month.

I am prejudice against Canadian TV (excluding KITH), not sure why.

My opinion of the show has completely turned around, and I can't think of a series that I enjoy more right now.

Perhaps you are like me and are unable to get past your initial impressions but who knows we all can't like the same things.

I became a fan of this show in 2005 after it just ended and when ctv started playing it 10 times a day on satellite. I loved it right away and now I have all the seasons on dvd, which I haven't even watched more than once since it is on syndication on several channels. I love most episodes and I find myself laughing my head off, super loud, even when I have seen it like 10 times. I get all the characters, love the distinctly Canadian aspect of the characters and writing. Some like Oscar can get on your nerves but they are only characters so I usually laugh at Oscar because he is such an *beep* and rude but that is why he is funny cuz he plays *beep* so great.

reply

Who are you calling an *beep*?! My taxes pay your salary! You got something to say to me why don't you come over here and say it to my face? Terrific invention, the automobile---I'll show you how it works someday!

Good one! Its like Oscar was right here haha.

The best part is that the Stamp People will back you up on that, Oscar.

To each his own.

Personally, I'm not a fan of KITH or Trailer Park Boys.

I would rate Corner Gas up there with The Simpsons and Seinfeld. Love this show and would like to see how it would have done in the good ol' USA.

I'm in the USA and I like it... but I don't think it would last long on the US Primetime schedule. What makes it work is its quirky, lowkey charm, but US TV is increasingly demanding fast-paced, edgy shows. Check out the newest hit, "2 Broke Girls," and see if you think the audience that embraced that show would do the same for "Corner Gas."

Now, back in the 50's and 60's, it might have been.

I now have two dead people in my jaw and I think they're trying to get out!

Anyway, it's pretty obvious what's going on.
