Any hints in the movie where you can tell.... *SPOILERS*

I saw this movie again for the third time last night. And now I'm thinking, are there any hints during the movie where you can tell that it's Papa Justify and Mama Cecile inside their new bodies? What I mean is: anything they say or do that "gives them away"? For example you have the obvious smoking of the old type of cigarettes that Mama smokes. And also that she says "fiddlesticks" all the time. Although that might not be valid as a hint as the character itself is an old woman. But what about Papa? Of course the "reveal" is when he calls Caroline "child" as well. But I thought the scene where he uses what seems to be a knife or a tool to scrape mud of his shoes could be a hint. What do you think? Any thoughts?

I don't know if this is a hint that the young lawyer is actually Justify, but I knew something was up with him immediately when I saw the legal books on his desk when Caroline ran to his house in the rain. They were not the kind of books a real attorney who had passed the bar would have - they are just one step up from something like the Dummy's Guide to Wills, etc. He was clearly someone posing as a lawyer. And yet the beginning of the movie indicated he had been an attorney for some time. So originally I thought it was a dumb miss on the part of the film-makers, but after seeing the end, now I get it.

You are spot on! I remember seeing someone mentioning that before but had forgotten about it. I don't think anything in this movie was a "dumb miss" by the film makers ;) I think everything was well planned. You can discover new hints/things everytime you watch it!

I twigged when he stopped outside the Gas Station doorway, as though hesitating to cross the line of brick dust.

Yeah, I remember seeing that scene the second time and realizing that she wasn't just being a crotchety old woman, she was jealous that her husband was talking and being kinda flirty with Caroline.

"And then he started cheating...especially at magnetic travel scrabble."

I think they picked Luke because Luke had passed the bar and was in the eyes of Louisiana a lawyer. So he had the papers for it. But then once Justify took over the body, he had not been a lawyer, so that's why he had the books. It made sense to me at least.

When Caroline wants to show the "Help Me" sheet to "Luke" and then "Violet" enters the room and sees Caroline and "Luke" sitting on the bed, she seems angry. Knowing it was actually her husband who was alone with the young blonde girl, it all makes sense.

The only hint I can think of was the body of Ben flipping out over his reflection in the mirror. But even then, I would have still gone with my original assumption--that he and Violet were possessed by the ghosts of the servants or something...and that having mirrors around would show them in their natural "ghostly" form. I really don't think I ever would have guessed the ending even if my memory was erased and I saw it one hundred times.

I agree with you! That's why I like this movie so much. The twist is so good! And there's so many paople that haven't seen it. It should be our mission to get more people to see it. So they can discover this hidden gem :)

but that wouldn't be so far from the truth. only a few technicalities about HOW they possessed them.

We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school

I think that Violet drops a lot of hints throughout the movie. I can't really remember specifics now, other than her talking about how "the last girl wasn't right" and how she asks about whether Caroline has tats. But these were so subtle you wouldn't notice the first time you saw the movie, which I love!!

When Caroline first comes to the house the lawyer is talking to the older woman and he says "What do you want? A Southern accent?" The old lady also says something along the lines of "Shes not gonna understand my house."

"Moses Smell the Roses."

He tells Violet "You know you're the only woman in my life" at the beginning.
