NO MATTER HOW TEMPTING IT IS, DON'T EVER SHOOT, STAB OR BLOW UP THE MERCHANT, BECAUSE HE DIES AND NEVER COMES BACK AGAIN FOR THE WHOLE GAME!
I accidently shot one on the castle level and he never returned. :(

shareAye - he just doesn't re-appear in the location you kill him in.
Later on in the game you can actually SEE (with the aid of the sniper-scope) 2 different merchants - so I think, each time you see a merchant, that he is a different person to the last merchant you met

The OP is probably talking about Professional Mode where killing the merchant in any location will prevent him from ever appearing in any other location after that.
I only played the first half on Pro Mode, and I never shot himthen.

shareI played professional mode,is that not hard enough? But mostly i shooted him after i saved my game and turn off my PS2 so when i load game he will still there. So i have no idea if he still there in the later of the game or not if i continued it
