Anyone else think it was too long?

I thought it was funny for the most part, but just too long. Comedies lose steam after a certain amount of time and this one definitely seemed to drag on to me. Does anyone else think it would have been better served if they had edited some stuff out and shortened the movie?

reply

I do. It was both overlong and it turned semi-serious and low on jokes by the final act when they realized they were really lovestruck.

Agreed, that's probably my biggest and only complaint about the movie. They probably could have done without the Will Ferrel cameo, but it was nice to see the man who started it.

I noticed this too, a bit, but here's the thing: what to cut out?!? Everything worked, and worked well, material wise. I would NOT have wanted to have been in charge of editing this film!!

I agree that it's a bit too long. What to cut? I've always felt the whole "go to the island with us" scenes went on too long and could be trimmed or another way found to further the connection between the couples. Playing football, dinner, the mother wants to be felt up, Sack Lodge is sick from eyedrops, time for bed, let's have a weird interlude with the gay son, let's wake up, oh hey there's the priest let's chat with him for a while. I thought the Sack Lodge character was essentially unbelievable and maybe could have made a brief appearance and disappeared. I disagree with others who say the Chazz scene should be cut. That scene took me from hating Will Ferrell to liking him, at least in small doses or where he plays off of other actors (Step Brothers, The Other Guys).

All of the above should not be construed as me saying it's a bad movie. It has its flaws, but I like it. I still can't believe Ebert gave this thumbs down while giving thumbs up the dreadful Honeymooners remake.

I think it was a little long. However I do like the semi-serious parts of the movie. I think Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson had great chemistry and their friendship was one of the best aspects of the movie. It's a great movie and one of my favorites, but yeah there are some parts that could have been cut out.

It might not be the length so much as the narrative structure. Their cover being blown feels like the climax, thrn it goes on for another 25 minutes.

Usually I hate when comedies switch to serious stuff, but the story worked really well in this. That being said, they could have cut down on John's depression scenes, or had him go straight to Chaz and see the lady at the funeral.

A lot of movies suffer from having false climaxes. Even if what follows it is good, the audience has already mentally checked out and they need to get back into it. And if the real climax really is just tacked on, audiences will be even less receptive.

It needed a better third act.

I agree parts of the film during the last 45 minutes of the movie were boring and stale and felt it could have been shortened, I didn't like the scenes of seeing John depressed and saddened nearly as much.

I was just saying this last night. The last 45 minutes of this movie are nearly unwatchable. Besides when Ferrell is on screen, its a terrible experience. It almost shocking. You're just like, "Can we go back to the beginning? Remember when we were having fun? I don't. I just kinda want to kill myself now." And thats basically the end of the movie.

I agree completely. Will Ferrell's scenes were unnecessary and helped make the story drag. The relationship between Vaughn and Wilson and Vaughn and Fisher were the high points. I can't believe how much more beautiful Macadams is in recent movies.

Will Ferrell (Chazz) was hilarious. It picked up the comedic element when I thought the movie was stuck in advancing the narrative.

Comedies are about the journey, not the story. However, I thought Wedding Crashers told a funny story (no matter how crazy) and brought it to closure. When a good comedy can bring the story to closure in a decent manner, it's a double score. Animal House and Caddyshack were hilarious and had big endings that brought the story to an end. Win, win!

I did with the third act, I thought the first two acts were so good and had a hard time watching the third act.
