They were actually yellow plums, I believe.
And he specifically targeted young girls who were old enough to ovulate but whom hadn't yet been deflowered (neatly alluded to in the early scene of him smelling the "frog stones" which were actually eggs), so he was essentially distilling their innocence, hence his acquittal while wearing their scent.
