How come nobody has pointed out this amazing fact?

(Also posted this in FAQ)

I was wondering if anybody had noticed that three of the actresses in North Country had won Academy Awards... (Theron, Spacek and McDormand)

Oh, and by the way?...The three of them have 78 wins with 71 nominations between them! I challenge anybody to come up with five films where you can find similar circumstances. When you do...cross 'em all off because none of them will have been directed by a woman.

reply

I also noticed that 2 of them (oscar winners) are too bloody damn old

dont tell anyone but i shed , the other side of my men femininity

Ps
I check the spelling, and i actually got it right ...femininity
...it just that when i try to speak it, it didnt sound right

Those three have 78 Oscars???? I think you're high.

reply

Also, I'm not that great at math, but I think it would be impossible to have 78 wins with only 71 nominations. This makes precious little sense.

reply

No, the guy means that they won 78 awards and got nominated for 71 other awards.

reply

I don't understand what this has to do with this particular movie. So it had good casting. Big deal. Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie even with it's feminist bias, but to say "find another movie with 78 awards and nominations for 71 other awards" is complete bullsh*t. Only a few of these nominations are from this movie and none of them on an Oscar for this movie. It's basically saying that "this movie is amazing because it has nominated actresses." Who cares? And to say "scratch of any other movie that has that many awards/nominations because it won't be directed by a woman." Again, so what? Who cares if it's directed by a woman or a man. Sexism runs both ways and feminism is a form of it. Sorry ladies, but it is. Feminism is complete bullsh*t. Yea, women went through hard times in this country. So did everybody. Yea, even white men. They were the people who fought for the independence of this country in the first place. And this doesn't justify some of the horrible things that white men did throughout history (slavery, Holocaust, etc.)Women had to go through a lot as well. The lack of rights is absurd and totally wrong for anybody. But life for women in America TODAY is pretty damn good, and if you don't like it, leave. Go somewhere where women have to walk 10 feet behind a man, and can only leave the house with a male accompaniment. And I'm not biased with compensations. Slavery happened a long time ago. The breaking of treaties with Native Americans was a long time ago. It's time for us as a country to forget about this (sorry, but it's been 150 years since slavery ended) and move forward as a country...as a whole. Just my two cents.

Feminism is "BS"--WTF??? As of 2007, it is still legal for a woman with the same work experience, qualifications and education as a male counterpart to earn less in the same exact job. Is that fair?

If I'm not mistaken, the events upon which this movie was based happened in the 1980s, which may have been in your lifetime.

Still say we should 'put this behind us'?

I don't why the previous posts had to try and drag slavery and Native Americans into this, a board that is supposed to be about one particular movie. As Butcher44 put it, "I don't understand what this has to do with this particular movie." However, today African Americans are still subject to racism, even murdered by being dragged behind a truck; last I checked, Native Americans still primarily live on reservations subject to shocking poverty.

Don't like women talking about feminism? Maybe you're the one who should leave the country.

But it is also legal for a man with the same work experience, qualifications and education as a female counterpart to earn less in the same exact job.

And of course, racism and sexism will always be a part of this world. That's human nature. But for the most part, it's gone. There are no laws holding back any race or gender. And I "dragged" slavery and racism into this because it's the same thing! Obviously, African Americans are treated badly in some areas. But for the most part, they are treated equal to everybody else. And yea, I do have a problem with feminism. But that is a small percentage of America. The reason I say if you're not happy with the gender rights, leave...is because feminists are angry with the majority of the American society.

"The government isn't fair."
"Employers aren't fair."
"Blah blah blah"
Who gives a *beep* You don't like the way OUR COUNTRY works, leave. I'm not saying I don't like the way the country works, I'm saying I don't like feminists.

Nevertheless, I respect the freedom of speech and all of the rights America offers that people take for granted.

Ya know those white men you talked about? The ones who fought for our independence from Britian? They fought for the ideal that we should be allowed to question the practices of the government. I don't really think they'd appreciate you telling people to leave their country for doing just that. If they just wanted everybody to accept things exactly as they are, a whole mess of fish in the Boston Harbor would have had longer lives and we'd all pronounce "aluminium" funny.

I don't understand your logic are you saying we should just stop trying to progress as a country because other countries are worse and we should just be glad were not like them? Are you telling me that right now if a less qualified male mechanic gets hired over for a more qualified female mechanic she should just buy a one way ticket to afganistan?

You cannot be so naive that you actually think everyone is considered equal in this country and all is right. Everyone may be equal under the law but there are still people in this country who believe women are useless in the workforce and should stay at home. You might say so what? those people are ignorant rednecks living in the backwoods who cares what they think. But some of them are police officers, firefighters, doctors, CEOs, politicians... men with a lot of power in society, men who make hiring decisions, men who decide an employees salary, and men who might even resort to intimidation to make sure a woman doesn't "take" their job. Feminism means promoting EQUALITY between men and women. I'm not angry with society or men it's the people who put women down and reduce them to meat that piss me off. The fact is women still make less then men.

"In the report, Behind the Pay Gap, the AAUW Educational Foundation found that just one year after college graduation, women earn only 80 percent of what their male counterparts earn. Ten years after graduation, women fall further behind, earning only 69 percent of what men earn. Even after controlling for hours, occupation, parenthood, and other factors known to affect earnings, the research indicates that one-quarter of the pay gap remains unexplained and is likely due to sex discrimination. Over time, the unexplained portion of the pay gap grows."

Also you can say sexism works both ways and ideally it should but you can't argue that it's also legal for a man to make less than a woman for the same job because it's more likely to happen the other way around. And you can't forget the history behind everything, yes we have to move on but we can't forget the past or it'll repeat i'm not saying hold grudges just be aware. The truth is men STILL have more power in society therefore it's harder to accuse women of sexism... thats just how it is.

I know i'm lucky i don't live in afganistan but i'm just saying there always room for improvement. Sorry for the long essay but i also don't take my right of freedom of speech for granted.

This one movie, I forgot what its called, well, anyways, the main three actors: Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, and Robert Duvall- all oscar winners- have a total of 92 wins and more nominations. The movie is directed by some guy named Francis Ford Coppola, its pretty good....

From a legislative standpoint, equality under the law should be all that anyone is given. No one should be given special consideration based on race, gender, sexual preference, religious affiliation, nationality, etc. No amount of legislation will change how a racist, sexist, or whatever -ist, thinks. A leopard can't change its spots, so to speak. Real change is not effected through the leaders of today. It is effected by educating the leaders of tomorrow. A government can pass laws against hate crimes, but it cannot pass laws against hatred. The real progress that the feminist movement has achieved has not been in the passing and enforcing of new laws, but in the education of new leaders. The goal of any rights movement should not be to enact laws to protect oppressed groups. The goal should be to create a society where such groups do not need protection by law.

What a great thread this is in spite of the fact that it was started talking about awards nominations lol. I think lalara-1's is the best, but you all bring up excellent points.

I just want to add to pwigington's great post and say that true leaders want to create more leaders, not just a bunch of people that respect them.
I spent my entire childhood growing up. What a waste.

Just thought I'd mention - these aren't just men. Women do this too, to my utter shock. Hard to believe one would shame one's own like that, but it happens. I guess if that's the way you're raised, and you have no incentive to change... but it turns my stomach nonetheless.

Anyways, I just thought I'd mention that the fault of gender inequality doesn't rest solely on the shoulders of guilty men.

And, on a happy note, there are clearly lots of men and women who are working for change :P

If people left because they didn't like the way this country was run, there wouldn't be anyone left except maybe you. This country has changed numerously since its founding in 1776, and if it hadn't you probably wouldn't be voting either unless you owned property and were a white male. I could reverse the argument on you and say if you don't like feminism, than leave, because feminism is a part of this country, and maybe you should move to a country where women will walk ten paces behind you.

Feminists aren't angry with America. I love America, and I'm a feminist. America is the land where in a few hundred years it can extend freedom from a small group of individuals to the majority of its citizens. What nation can do better than that? I think you need to learn the definition of feminism. It is not man-hating mullet wearers, but it is wives, sisters, mothers and daughters who want the same respect, rights, and responsibilities as men. I admit some women give feminists a bad name, just as some men give men a bad name, but that is not true feminism.
