Richard Jenkins should have won and Oscar for best supporting actor
The movie shines in every frame he's in.

Agree. He was terrific.

Actually, I just watched this film last night. Throughout the film, I kept thinking, "Richard Jenkins had to have been nominated for the Academy Award Best Supporting Actor." So, I looked up Richard Jenkins today and it said that he was not nominated--bummer. But, I did find that he was nominated (but did not win) the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in The Visitor. I have to see that film now.
shareFrom the trivia section:
Actor Bill Nighy stated during a Q&A session at the British Film Institute in London in 2010 that in his opinion he regards Richard Jenkins' performance in this film as one of the finest in motion picture history.
There's a mad man in there with his hand on a...on a BUTTON!
Definitely see The Visitor. Jenkins is just stupendous in it. He's just so very good at being self contained so that when he shows even a little emotion it just jumps out at you.
shareHe is excellent and oscar worthy in this. He's also very adept and good in very silly comedies - ala Step Brothers, Hall Pass. But in this, during the scene when he defends his daughter for the first time - he's soaring.
A very underrated actor.
I agree his ability to be subtle reminds me of Gary Cooper. He's very contained and very natural, so when he roars you tend to sit up a bit.
I'm shocked he wasn't nominated!
shareHe was astounding! His performance where he stood up for his daughter in front of the miners made me cry.
shareJenkins is a terrific actor and he tried his best, but his role is a cliche. His change of heart doesn’t ring true at all. Nobody involved with this condescending film should have been anywhere near the Oscars, although the actors do what they can.
shareI thought so too.
