Call me stupid but...

I didn't get a single fragment of this movie. No, I tell a lie, I got the bit that their "invention" does far more than they expected it to do. I got that, but anything after that was just a blur of confusion to me.

I've read the synopsis on IMDB and various posts on here but I still don't get it.

Is there an idiot's guide to this movie because I'd love to "get it"?

There is a very nice summary of what was happening with in the article "Primer: The Perils and Paradoxes of Restricted Time Travel Narration." (www.nobleworld.biz/images/Gendler.pdf) [see pages 147-149]

It is by Jason Gendler, who at the time was a Masters student in Critical Studies at the University of California's Department of Film and Television. The article was published in the December 2006 journal called Nebula. Gendler describes some of narrative techniques of the film and distinguishes what we see occur on screen, versus what is depicted in narration and montage, and what we must deduce and or speculate.

It's cool that you like it but admit to not understanding it.

It's not a popcorn film where you can sit w your girlfriend and glance around to see who else is watching. It's smart and new (at least when it first came out).

You've already taken a step I take when wanting more info and that's looking up the synapsis online. I'd keep looking around other sites and read reviews by critics to get their take on it.

Then there's the commentaries on the DVD. One is by the director and the other is the director and crew.

This just means you can have enjoyable repeat viewings.

I find most of it pretty simple up until they start making multiple trips into the past. Abe and Aaron are low level silicon valley employees who are trying to make a go of their own inventions. While working on a device to try and counteract the effect of gravity, they accidentally invent a time machine. They then use it to try and make more money on the stock market using advanced information.

Then it begins to get complicated. They run into a version of Abe's girlfriend's father who has apparently traveled back in time and promptly falls into an inexplicable coma. It turns out that Abe secretly made a fail safe machine and, thinking their time travel activity has gone too far, goes back in time to try and stop himself and Aaron from using the machines. However, he collapses from exhaustion. It then turns out that Aaron had already discovered the failsafe and made his own version of it. He has been traveling back in time independent of Abe and wants to try and change things. Their main goal seems to be, for some reason, an attempt to change an incident where Abe's girlfriend's ex showed up at a party and drunkenly threatened her with a shotgun. They run through the day several times trying to make themselves seem more heroic in stopping the guy. Eventually Abe and Aaron have a falling out and Aaron apparently leaves for parts unknown, there to build a large sized version of the device.

Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything.

This is the best synopis i've seen so far, i'm not going to the lie the film was making me surf the net and not pay attention after the multiple trips, when i saw they were fighting and continuously talking about this party incident, and then recordings and fail safe machines, and killing doubles... It was just way too much nonsense.

That's exactly why I found this movie dumb as S*** : Why would they care about some girl's ass when they are changing human history and could be rich famous and all; this is the dumbest thing ever.
And I disagree with your last part. last scene shows one guy telling to others to put something at exactly 50cm from each other. you just assume he is building a bigger machine. I think he is not : he would so it secretly. He's just working somewhere they speak french.

Silly, Aaron wanted to be a hero.
They both used the machine to make money.
Aaron is building a large time machine in the end.
He left his double with his old life and now is free to do whatever he wants.
It's pretty simple.

PS. Don't watch Upstream Color.

Yep. There is a scene that sets up an important plotpoint - what if you already had all the money in the world, which they will if the keep trading. What is left to do? Punch the boss in the face of course! Get the ex-BF off the streets. These things entail risk that you'd probably avoid. Unless, that is, there was no risk because you could take a mulligan if it didn't go right.

They're engineers, but in Texas, not silicon valley.

Same here. I only understood they had mistakenly built a device that allows an object to move forward in time at a greater rate. After that, I didn't realize they were going back in time so that threw me way off.

Admittedly I grew bored with the film and my attention started to drift. I may watch it again in a week but if I still don't get it, then I'll look online for an explanation.
