Did this movie ever lead football players to take up golf instead?

I had to wonder if there were any cases where this movie actually led high school football players away from the sport. The portrayal of high school football in this movie was disturbing to put it mildly. Not to mention rather pitiful in how the football team was the only way this town could ever see itself as productive.

The athletes in this movie were nothing more than tools that the irresponsible adults in this movie used in order to give themselves a sense of worth and relive their own glory days. Their humanity was 100 % irrelevant. Are the towns with the best high school football programs in the nation always like this, all the time? And if so, did this portrayal ever lead to any aspiring football starts to say the hell with it and turn to golf or darts instead?

Sure, there are lots of programs with a culture like the one in the movie, but they are definitely not "always like this, all the time." Some programs, yes; others are more cognizant of the fact that there is a world outside of football, lol. It just depends. I do agree with you that some people/programs place far too much of an importance on football and lose perspective, but if any "aspiring football stars" decide to play golf or darts instead because of that, then they probably weren't all that serious (or good) at football to begin with. Most big-time players relish that attention and enjoy the challenge of rising above all that pressure.
