Stoney Case

Big fan of the book and movie and I have known for quite some time that future University of New Mexico and NFL quarterback Stoney Case was a member of the 1988 Panthers, but I've always wondered what was his role?
Mike Winchell was the starting quarterback, a role Case would inherit in 1989 and lead Permian to a state title. But did Case play at all? He was a remarkable athlete -- evidenced by the numbers he put up as a runner and passer while at UNM -- it's hard not see him having played receiver or defensive back as a junior.
But his only mention in the movie is when Gaines' rearranges his depth chart following the loss to Dallas Carter.
It's something that has always bugged me, but I've never been able to dig up any information on it.

He played only in mop up duty late in games. Mike Winchell was a two year starter at QB which was very rare for Permian at the time. Case was a great player but Winchell was as well and with him being the senior and a returning starter he was the starter. At the time the majority of the starters were all seniors. The program was like a machine at the time they constantly reloaded with new players every season and never missed a beat.
