You are correct, we rented this movie along with Full Metal Jacket (the latter to show some friends who had not seen it and the former just as a random pick up) and at the opening credits we were pretty amazed at the cast list; Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Dylan McDermott, etc. We basically thought that any movie that had Kevin Spacey AND Morgan Freeman must be good. It is a law of the universe for the most part.
We could not have been more wrong.
For the most part I feel sorry for Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey, this is a terrible movie. We couldn't make it all the way through and it actually drove one of our friends away thirty minutes in. The plot is hackneyed and trite, the acting is uninspired, and the directing....(for an example, there is one scene where Justin Timberlake's character has scars on his face, obviously a big deal to the overall *sigh* narrative, and in the next shot he is completely healed and all of his various facial wounds are completely gone).
As for the actors, Kevin Spacey and Morgan Freeman will be fine, this movie will be quietly hidden under the matress never to be seen or hear from again. Justin Timberlake will continue getting roles because he is, well, Justin Timberlake and he has an appeal to a certain segment of the population (though not to this segment, that's for sure). No matter how good a cast list is, nothing can make up for a truly awful movie.
