The plot of the movie explained chronologically, if you're frustrated.
There doesn't seem to be enough ambiguity to spark debate in this film, in my opinion. There are clear signs and indications of the how things unfolded, who sent the tapes, etc. Listed below in chronological (i.e. story format) order.
1. Majid's parents are killed by the French, George's family adopts him.
2. George does not like Majid, and lies about him to have him removed from the home (mirrors French/Arab race relations, etc.)
3. George grows up to be successful, Majid grows up to be miserable. Both have sons.
4. Majid tells his son about his relationship with George and what transpired (how George lied to have him sent to an orphanage, ruined his life, etc.)
5. Majid's son meets with Pierrot and they create a plan to record their homes and send videotapes/messages to George, and anyone else necessary to facilitate a confrontation between George and Majid, in an attempt at reconciliation for the purpose of both fixing Majid's life and having George own up to his actions on how he had Majid thrown out as a child.
6. Videotapes and drawings are sent by Pierrot and Majid's son - both filming their own homes, drawings can come from either but the child-like style implicates the sons, as well as the attempt to revive the memory (adults can try to draw like a child, but it tends to not look genuine, especially in repeat instances).
7. When George lies to his wife, Pierrot gets the tape from Majid's son and delivers it to her, in order to facilitate Majid and George confronting the issue.
8. During Pierrot/Majid's son's plan, Pierrot realizes that his mother is having an affair with PIerre, and that Pierre may potentially be his father (this is supported in the countless affair accusations from both George and Pierrot, as well as when George's wife lies to him about Pierre and his wife being at the home to watch TV, when it was only Pierre [which George sees when he looks out the window].
9. The affair distracts Pierrot, and Majid's suicide infuriates Majid's son. Pierrot begins to believe everyone has done bad things; Majid's son is still furious. All tapes STOP at this point.
10. Pierrot confronts Anne about her relationship, and Majid's son confronts George about his father's death, and George's guilt.
11. George shuts everything out, as does Anne with PIerrot and George re: the affair; PIerrot and Majid's son realize their plan has not changed anything, but only further proven their beliefs re: the relationships of older generations, and how they treat one another (both with regard to gender and race-based fidelity).
12. We see a dream sequence of Majid being taken from his home, while George's family stands idly by. This is immediately contrasted with a scene showing Majid's son and PIerrot embracing each other as equals, and having a cordial conversation before parting ways.
Probably won't read the replies to this so questions may go unanswered, although I think I put most of it up there. The only ambiguity in this movie, as far as I'm concerned, is whether George's mother was aware of the plan, or whether her conversation with George was only meant to mirror/emphasize the theme of reconciliation.
I just came on here after watching the movie and saw a ton of posts where people seem confused, or are asking a lot of questions, so I figured I'd try to help.
