In the beginning of the movie, Tessa was given some sort of charms by one of the locals. When her doctor friend saw the charm, he seemed to be disturbed as did other locals who saw what she was holding. Does anyone know what it is?

It was made from bottle tops as I remember suspended by threads from a frame of sticks by a child using the only materials available in a poverty stricken community. Besides, wasn't Tessa pregnant by this point in the story? However, it is a long time since I viewed this scene and I may have got it wrong......
