surprised at so much critism.

it's a while since I watched this movie but I remember it as very touching and subtle - can't remember the last time a movie made me feel the way this one did and also made me think. Apart from the political messages, it was simply just such a beautiful love story, first and foremost!

The problem is that most people don't see the movie the way you do.

For most, this is a purely political movie. To me it is a human story, about human growth, human discovery, human love, and the human soul. Politics here should be seen merely as a backdrop and nothing more.

reply

cheers, seems we viewed it the same way.

reply

I just saw it and share your views. I found the film very moving.

reply

I concur. I view this film as a very moving love story. What's even more moving is as Justin uncovers more about his wife's work, he falls more in love with her. The politics merely serve as a backdrop and help to drive the love story.

I absolutely loves Weisz's line "You could learn me"

Who could say no to that?

reply

I agree! John le Carré said in what will be his final American interview that he was never trying to deliver a message with his novels, but rather considered himself into the business of story telling.

reply

I agree. For me it's a love story in its core.

reply

I thought the movie was a little long, but I also saaw the political and social aspects as a backdrop for a man finding out what his wife was about after her death as well as letting his love for her putting him in danger.

reply

It is because the politics behind it are more interesting than the love plot, that people latch onto that. If you could ignore the political backdrop, you might enjoy the love story more (even though it isn't all that great imho, but whatever).
