Washington, D.C. airport/Air Florida Flight 90

This 1982 crash was one of the first to involve not following de-icing procedures. It also shows the dangers of having an airport near downtown but since the is Washington, D.C. the airport stays where it is because politicians want to be 5 minutes away from the airport.

I remember that crash so well...the ice, the survivors of the crash freezing in the water, the hero who jumped in to help.

I haven't seen the show for a while now. My DVR is set to record it; hopefully, one of these days, the show will reappear and I'll get to see it again!

Some of the banter from the pilots was very damning, one of them said "we got to keep the Feds happy". Back then cockpit voice recorders were on a limited time loop and got erased every 30 minutes so these guys would say anything.

And have you noticed that the Washington, D.C. airport is not featured on MicroSoft Simulator?

I'm from the UK but flew with Air Florida in a 737 into Washington National from Miami (and then out again a week later) in April 1982 some three months after the crash. It was still quite cold then with some snow about. I looked at the stewardesses closely during landing and the next week on take off, because I'm sure that despite outward appearances, they were still very concious that with a different rota it would have been them instead of poor Donna and the rest.

"Gee, look at all the neat tyre tracks in the snow!"

The incident was also done quite well in a TV movie called Flight 90: Disaster on the Potomac. The dialogue in the cockpit immediately before and during take-off was taken verbatim from the CVR, if I recall correctly.

That was a bad day overall in DC. Lost in the Air Florida story, there was also a disaster involving the DC metro trains that day.
